As you begin to take on more responsibilities in your job, you will be asked to handle more daunting tasks. Sooner or later as a leader, you will be asked to run a meeting. Running a meeting can be very intimidating, especially if you have never done so before. In order to lead a meeting successfully, it’s important to follow these tips:

Make Your Objective Clear

When you are running a meeting, there is a reason why. Whether it’s introducing new ideas, making plans, or reporting a status update, these objectives need to be made clear. The first point you need to state and clarify to your colleagues is why everyone is gathered and what the meeting will accomplish. This will ensure the meeting remains as productive as possible and that everyone will stay on topic.

Have a Plan For Anything

It’s important to plan out your meeting’s agenda and the points you are going to cover. In the perfect world, every meeting will be able to hit all points without interruption or delays. However, in the real world, it’s important to plan for any mishaps just in case. There could be a chance not everyone shows up, your projector doesn’t work, or other interruptions occur. This is why it’s important to plan for this ahead of time to ensure all the meeting’s objectives are still met.

Keep a Positive Attitude

For many people, they will often dread meetings. When it’s your turn to run one, have a positive attitude. If you’re excited and in a good mood about it, your colleagues will be encouraged to feel the same way. Be fired up and enthusiastic about what you need to present on to achieve better results, collaborate, and inspire. Motivate others to be excited about it and your meeting will be much more successful.

Leave Extra Time After

When you finish your meeting, even if it’s early, don’t end it abruptly. It’s important to leave time open for questions and comments. Everyone in attendance should walk away with a clear idea of what was accomplished and have something to take away with them. In order for your first meeting to go well and be a success, it’s important to follow these tips.
